Department of Physical Medicine

The Physical Education Physician's Office provides comprehensive diagnostic, preventive and assessment care in the field of physical education medicine. It provides sports examinations for children and adults, and focuses on primary and secondary prevention of civilisation diseases.

Our outpatient clinic is an integral part of the RNB cardiac rehabilitation and exercise therapy program for patients with pre-existing diseases such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease, hypertension, patients with chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, after heart surgery, etc.

Some serious diseases only become apparent during physical exercise and can therefore only be detected by stress testing. This examination helps to detect high-risk conditions early and helps to prevent sudden death during sporting activity, for example in some types of cardiomyopathies and other heart diseases.

We cooperate with specialized RNB outpatient clinics, especially cardiology, rehabilitation, pulmonology, and diabetes. Also with the nutritional counselling centre and the Mental Rehabilitation Centre. Thanks to this, comprehensive care is provided for athletes and patients within one department.

Scope and spectrum of health care provided

  • Differential diagnosis and investigation of difficulties related to physical exertion (e.g. shortness of breath, reduced performance, chest pain, subjectively perceived palpitations).
  • Expert prescription of physical activity in patients with chronic disease, particularly cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, diabetes and obesity.
  • Conducting medical examinations according to Decree No. 391/2013 Coll., on medical fitness for physical education and sport, including resting ECG, anthropometric measurements, exercise testing (ergometry) in indicated patients to assess the functional capacity of the body, sonographic examination
  • Specialist services for the sporting population (children, youth, performance and elite athletes), including:
    - nutrition and supplementation advice
    - assessment of medical eligibility to study at sports schools
    - expert advice and preventive examinations to ensure safe participation in sport.
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation, in particular with specialist departments of cardiology, pneumology, diabetes, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, obesitology, psychiatry and physiotherapy.

Examinations are carried out by appointment at the RNB reception in person or by phone on 311 745 000.

In case you are unable to attend the appointment on the day of the examination, please call 311 745 255.

Ergometric examination

This is a painless, non-invasive examination in which we monitor heart function, blood pressure and physical fitness while exercising on a treadmill.

The examination begins with a check-up with the physician, followed by a resting ECG, blood pressure, height and weight measurements.

According to the physician's indication, the examination continues with graded physical exercise on a bicycle ergometer (exercise bike). During the exercise we monitor your body's response: blood pressure, heart rate, continuous ECG recording, hemoglobin saturation.

The exercise lasts approximately 5-20 minutes. You will be monitored by medical staff for 10-30 minutes after you finish.

Notice
If you experience any discomfort during the examination (chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, irregular heartbeat), report it to the staff immediately.
