Repeat recipe
A physician can issue a so-called repeat prescription to a patient who suffers from a chronic illness and has to be prescribed his or her usual medication frequently. This way, the patient does not have to go to the physician again and again just to have the prescription written. If the prescription is to be repeated, the physician must indicate on the prescription the number of repeat dispensings. Each dispensing of such a medicine must then be stamped on the prescription by the pharmacy.
Such repetition shall not be possible when prescribing medicines containing narcotic or psychotropic substances, ephedrine or pseudoephedrine in quantities greater than 30 mg per unit of dosage form (for example, in one tablet).
The prescription is valid for 14 days (except for antibiotic prescriptions and blue-stripe prescriptions). You can collect the medicine on a repeat prescription within 6 months of issue; this period may be extended by the physician to 1 year.
Ten rights of patients at the pharmacy
The Czech Chamber of Pharmacy has issued a public declaration of patients' rights in pharmacies.According to this code of ethics, a patient has the right to:
- To polite, considerate and pleasant behaviour of the staff, to respect your disability.
- To reasonable privacy. No one can force you to talk about sensitive issues in the presence of other people.
- To know the name of the health professional attending to you. Every pharmacist and pharmacy assistant must be given a name tag with their job title.
- To dispense or order medication according to your prescription or your wishes, if possible.
- To suggest a course of action (substitute medicine, referral back to the physician, etc.) in the event of unavailability of the medicine requested by you or the physician (e.g. in the event of discontinuation, registration, failure, etc.).
- To verify and refill an incomplete prescription, if possible (verification of the prescribed medication according to the pharmacy's records, your findings, or consultation with your physician) so that you do not have to make another trip to the doctor's office and pharmacy.
- To automatically provide you with basic information about the medicine you are buying or picking up on prescription.
- To receive a clear and reasonable answer if you have questions about the effect, composition, use, side effects or interactions between medicines.
- To have an individually prepared medicine made or provided (as prescribed by your physician) or to be told which pharmacy will prepare the medicine.
The Code of Ethics for Patients' Rights was developed in relation to the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. Patients' Rights were proclaimed by the Central Ethics Committee of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic on 25 February 1992.
