This outpatient clinic is the centre of the department, which specialises in diseases of the digestive tract, especially the oesophagus, stomach, intestines and rectum. The main diagnostic and in some cases therapeutic technique is the so-called endoscopic technique. This means that special flexible probes - endoscopes - are introduced through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum or through the rectum into the intestine, which, thanks to a camera system, deliver a video signal to a monitor, allowing observation and examination of the organs being scanned.
The endoscopes are also used to take tissue samples for microscopic examination, or to perform minor medical procedures - for example, removal of polyps or stopping bleeding. The gastroenterology outpatient clinic also monitors and treats long-term patients with, for example, ulcer disease or intestinal disorders.
A special section is the hepatobiliary clinic, where all those diagnosed with liver, gallbladder or biliary tract disorders are concentrated. In this unit, they are provided with both highly specialised diagnostics and the necessary treatment.
