Meanwhile, construction machines and a crane are circling around the five-storey building under construction between the hills in Beroun, in a part of the local hospital area. The hospital for psychiatric and psychological care should be ready in a year and a half.
"Our goal is to build the most modern psychiatric facility in Europe and to destigmatise psychiatric care. The number of people with mental health problems is increasing rapidly. Mental health problems affect one in three Czech adults", explains Sotirios Zavalianis, investor and owner of AKESO Holding, the company behind the project. The word "hospital" is deliberately avoided in the name, in the spirit of modern psychiatric care.
The centre is already recruiting its first doctors. The owner has also declassified who will lead the centre professionally. Prof. Ján Praško, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist who is currently working at the University Hospital Olomouc, will be responsible for the treatment part and medical programmes.
We are walking through the future entrance hall. Sotirios Zavalianis sees its shape as a sunny "square in Florence". "You should feel like you're outside, not inside a building," he says.
The facility will cater for two hundred patients, mainly from the Central Bohemian Region, but also envisages outpatient care, with the exception of children and chronic patients. It will employ a 160-strong medical and therapeutic team. This is currently the second largest investment for Akeso , amounting to approximately CZK 1.2 billion. They covered the first part of the construction work from their own resources without subsidies, and then they will use a loan for the completion.
The construction, which involved domestic and foreign architects, relies on several unique features. The building will feature a circadian lighting system that simulates sunlight. In other words, the intensity of the light will change according to the phase of the day. "Imagine the most beautiful day at the seaside or in the mountains, how good it makes you feel, and it will be tailored to have a beneficial effect for the patient," described Pavel Scholz, deputy project manager.
Investments have also been made, for example in shatterproof glass and smart security systems, so that the hospital can do without bars. "You won't see bars anywhere here, I guarantee it," promises Pavel Scholz in an interview with SZ Byznys.
Details of what the state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital will look like can be found in the video.
