"Vascular surgery focuses on patients with vascular diseases, i.e. diseases of the arteries and veins. The group of patients with arterial disorders includes patients with difficulties caused by narrowing of the arteries - i.e. patients with ischemic disease (anemia) of the lower limbs, with disorders of the carotid arteries, but also patients with difficulties caused by excessive expansion of the arteries - so-called bulges. Patients with venous disorders are mostly those with varicose veins. Last but not least, the field of vascular surgery also includes the establishment of dialysis vascular accesses - the so-called a-v shunts in patients with renal failure", MUDr. Valešová briefly summarizes this issue.
In the case of most vascular diseases, prevention plays an important role, i.e. a healthy lifestyle - regular exercise, limiting or ideally avoiding smoking, monitoring blood pressure and keeping it within the recommended limits, as well as monitoring the level of fats in the blood and starting adequate treatment in case of their elevated level. Monitoring patients in the vascular surgeon's outpatient clinic is an important part of prevention, both in patients with problems that do not yet require surgical or interventional treatment and in those who have undergone vascular reconstruction or interventional vascular procedures. It is important to remember that, as with other diseases, by establishing a diagnosis and regular check-ups, impending health problems can be detected early and severe consequences prevented by early treatment.
