Remembrance of MUDr. Jan Calta

6. 3. 2020

Today marks the third year since the death of Jan Calta, MD, long-time director of the Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre in Pardubice and professional director of Jessenia a.s. and NH Hospital a.s., which operate the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun and the Hořovice Hospital. Now all these medical facilities belong to the AKESO holding.

MUDr. Jan Calta was born in 1951 into an artistic family in Prague. His father was a stage designer and his mother an actress. In 1978 he graduated from the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, specializing in rehabilitation and physical medicine. Rehabilitation medicine became, besides photography, his great passion. He had a unique feeling and sense for new directions in the field of rehabilitation, but he also had the necessary courage and indomitable will to propose, defend and promote these directions in real use.

"When I began working with Dr. Calta twenty years ago, I was already aware of his strong personality, which could draw those around him into his plans. This was due to his positive energy and incredible vitality. We were able to take cancer care at Multiscan to a level that no one believed in at first. Thanks to his strong will, work commitment and innovative procedures, the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital became the most modern facility of its kind in the Czech Republic. I remember him as a fair partner with a human approach," recalled Jan Calta, owner of AKESO Holding Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.

And how do his other colleagues remember him? We asked Milena Kolářová, M.D., head of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation Care.

"Honza Calta belonged to the good old and famous Czech school of rehabilitation. He was a pupil of Professor Janda, an expert, a man with a difficult life who demanded the maximum from himself and others. Maybe Honza learned the same from him, maybe it was innate in him. He lived his work and expected the same from others.

I have worked with him in Beroun since 2010. Back then, the rehabilitation there was like any other. We were just getting started. But Honza, like Mr. Zavalianis, knew that the Rehabilitation Center in Beroun would not be an ordinary rehabilitation. Honza was not only a doctor, but also a technically gifted person. He liked to plan and design space. I don't know when he met Mr. Zavalianis, but in any case the meeting was useful. During the lifetime of Honza Calta, the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital changed beyond recognition. The old buildings became new and modern. And the Rehabilitation Centre gained a name among rehabilitation departments in the Czech Republic. The first Beroun Rehabilitation Day was also organized, which has been held every year since then and its fame is constantly growing.

Honza Calta was a demanding co-worker and manager. He was desperately and superbly punctual. If I arrived for the 7:01 announcement instead of 7:00, he would grunt right at the door. He didn't like to compromise. He fought for his views openly and hard. He probably had enemies too, but he could give advice and help. He had a sense of humor. We, his co-workers, liked him. Rehabilitation, and especially rehabilitation here in Beroun, was his heart's business. Perhaps he would still like it today.

Despite his illness, he kept working. He advised young doctors, treated patients, organized. He knew everything about his illness. We all knew how serious his diagnosis was, but somehow we began to believe that he would overcome the disease with his strength and determination. The day he died suddenly at home, he was also working. So the death took everyone by surprise. He was a man who left a clear mark, and because of that, he continues to be a part of the Jan Calta Rehabilitation Center in more than just his name. Thank you, Honza."

Outside of work, he loved photography and travel. His photographs from the surroundings of Beroun and from beautiful places around the world are still in the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun and in the hospital in Hořovice. The permanent exhibition can be seen in the hallway of the RNB café. It is affectionately called Honzik's Journey.

Stop by these beautiful photos and remember a wonderful person, a great doctor and a great personality MUDr. Jan Calta. Our thoughts today are with his wife and our colleague Jana and with Dr. Calta's children.
