The arthroscopy centre in the Beroun hospital, opened in autumn 2008, has set itself high goals - to create a workplace that will soon be known throughout the country with a team of experienced doctors, in state-of-the-art equipped rooms, with quality material and perfect facilities for medical staff and patients. This was achieved very quickly, already in 2009 2291 arthroscopic operations were performed here, in 2010 this number was even increased. It is quite interesting that exactly 300 operations . But the statistical number is certainly not everything, although such a number of arthroscopic operations as in the Beroun Hospital is most likely not achieved even by much larger hospitals in the Czech Republic, including Prague clinics. The most important thing is the satisfaction of patients, positive feedback and thanks for care, which increasingly come to the hospitals from different parts of the country. It is certainly also because the Arthroscopy Centre in Beroun has a number of things that not everywhere can offer.
Without a doubt, the Arthroscopy Center has one big advantage that many similar facilities do not have. It should be prefaced that arthroscopic surgery is essentially an outpatient procedure. But...! The patient also needs additional care before and after surgery. And the outpatient realm is usually not flexible enough to provide that right after the procedure. "The operation is not the end of the story at our centre, the hospital continues to take care of the patient", says the head of the Arthroscopy Centre in Beroun as. MUDr. Zdeněk Kopečný and continues. Our patients are already instructed by a physiotherapist before the procedure on how the physiotherapy will take place after the operation. They do not go home immediately after the procedure and receive further physiotherapy instruction on the day of the procedure, including training on their general mobility. For ligament repairs, as well as many other procedures performed here, targeted medical rehabilitation follows from the second day of surgery here in the hospital. This is very important and essentially irreplaceable. Patients thus acquire good habits for their further exercises, learn to walk properly with support and much more. So they don't get to the stage where they wait for a week, often longer, after surgery before they can start outpatient rehabilitation. That this can delay or even complicate the whole recovery process probably goes without saying. As an example, let me mention the young people we have here, especially after various injuries, who are also in theatres in large numbers. They want and need to be back in active life as quickly as possible, but almost everywhere after the surgery it is assumed that they will somehow cope and make it work." Nobody, with genuine exceptions, likes to stay in hospital, but in our case it turns out that this comprehensive care is probably one of the main reasons why patients from all over the country are increasingly turning up in Beroun.

Another plus for the patients of the Arthroscopy Centre at the Beroun Hospital is that after the operation they are supervised by an anaesthesiologist together with the orthopaedic surgeon, which is also not common elsewhere.Especially for elderly and otherwise ill patients this is certainly very good and reassuring news.
It is also good news that the spectrum of procedures is moving forward. The arthroscopic centre in Beroun performs a full range of arthroscopic operations, including complex and reconstructive ones, and in fact it can be said that these now make up the majority of the surgery.Last May, new operations were started in Beroun, in which patients can have partial replacements implanted, mainly in the knees, but also in the shoulders. In fact, a full endoprosthesis is already a last resort, this is a kind of a precursor, and the lifetime of such a partial replacement is around 20 years. So for younger people, but also for older people for whom a total joint replacement would be too difficult a procedure. At this point it should be noted that all these procedures are possible not only thanks to experienced surgeons, but also to other medical staff, including anaesthetists, ward nurses and others who care for the patient after surgery.
And of course, it's also thanks to the excellent equipment. For the owner of the hospital ing. Sotirios Zavalianis, it is certainly not a cheap affair. The equipment, but also the materials, are expensive, and he chooses the best quality that the market has to offer. No expense is spared on the patients, mostly absorbable material that integrates into the bone and does not put any further strain on the body. It should also be mentioned that all the equipment in Beroun is double, because it is operated on in two theatres, as well as the fact that many things are disposable, that the optics last for about 200 procedures ... The list could go on and on.
Let us recall one more interesting novelty. Those who are afraid of injections will probably be happy about it. Virtually all post-operative patients have been injected with a certain medication to prevent thromboembolic disease. However, there is a preparation, in tablet form, which is already in use after hip surgery. Under the auspices of the State Institute for Drug Control, the Arthroscopy Centre at Beroun Hospital is conducting a study to investigate the suitability of this drug for arthroscopic surgery. Patients no longer have to inject themselves in the abdomen for a number of days, but simply swallow a tablet.
Head of the Arthroscopy Centre at Beroun Hospital as. MUDr. Zdeněk Kopečný has already emphasized several times that this centre provides the entire team of doctors and other staff with truly top-quality working conditions. Who will make the most of it in the final phase? The answer is simple - the patient!
