Minimally invasive procedures without a long hospital stay
One-day urology is the optimal option for a wide range of patients. However, the main criterion for this type of care is good overall health. “Same-day urological surgery is the ideal choice for patients who are in decent physical condition and do not have significant underlying medical conditions,” explains Chief PhysicianPetr Běhounek.
Currently, the range of procedures at the Beroun Hospital focuses primarily on the specific needs of men, which is also reflected in the patient population. “In general urology and major surgery, we treat both genders. In same-day care, men currently make up the majority of patients, but if the types of procedures change in the future, women will of course also be among our patients,” clarifies Dr. Běhounek.
Currently, the medical team in this program primarily performs standard procedures on the male genitalia. These include, for example, surgeries for a tight foreskin (phimosis), inguinal hernia repairs, and vasectomies. However, plans for the future are much more ambitious. “We want to continue expanding the range of procedures, and we’re also planning endoscopic surgeries. These are procedures performed inside the urinary tract using a specialized camera-equipped device,” explains Dr. Běhounek. The main benefit for the patient remains the possibility of a quick recovery at home and a significantly shorter hospital stay.
Diabetes and a tight foreskin may be related
Anatomical predispositions play a role in many conditions treated through same-day care; however, there are areas where prevention can make a difference. “For example, phimosis—or a tight foreskin—can be very closely linked to diabetes. So from this perspective, prevention is warranted,” the physician notes, highlighting the connection between diabetes and urological problems.
Rapid Advancements in the Field and a Look to the Future
Urology is one of the fastest-growing medical fields. Current trends are clearly moving toward minimizing invasiveness and maximizing patient safety. “Our field is evolving at a breakneck pace, primarily due to the advent of robotic surgery, laser prostate surgery, and kidney stone fragmentation. While these highly complex procedures will, for the time being, require the facilities of a comprehensive urology department, all minor procedures—including the aforementioned endoscopic surgeries—are clearly moving toward a same-day care model,” says Petr Běhounek, describing these dynamic developments.
