The Arthroscopy Centre of the Beroun Hospital has gained a high reputation in the five years since it was opened, with more than 15,000 patients coming to Beroun from all parts of the country. This, in addition to the many positive responses, in itself testifies to the excellent quality of the work of the experienced surgeons, anaesthesiologists and other medical staff. Last but not least, it is also thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment, devices and materials used. Let us stop with the materials, implants. As in many other things in healthcare, there is constant development here too. The owner of Beroun Hospital ing. Sotirios Zavalianis does not spare on patients, he really chooses the best that the market offers.
"From the very start of the Arthroscopy Centre in Beroun Hospital, the surgery and implants used here have been of a high standard. Of course, we want to improve the quality all the time", says the head of the Arthroscopy Centre as. MUDr. Zdeněk Kopečný and emphasizes that the best conditions are created for this in Beroun.
At the same time, MUDr. Kopečný points out that during the last two years, implants have been replaced with even higher quality implants - the absorbable implants used in shoulder and knee surgeries have been upgraded. The original absorbable implants, which have changed over time to ligaments, are now so-called osteoinductive, meaning that they are permanently integrated into the bone tissue. The advantage? The strength of the bone is not reduced. In some cases, titanium implants have been replaced by osteoinductive implants (Polyetheretherketone-PEEK).
For example, in corrective osteotomies (surgery to correct axial deformities of the lower limb/i-blanks), the splint is integrated into the bone and does not need to be removed after healing as with the titanium splint. The advantage? The patient does not have to undergo a second surgery (first picture).
Another innovation in arthroscopic surgery is the introduction of the all-insice anterior cruciate ligament replacement fixation system using tight rope fixation, bringing both improved graft placement , which is more anatomical. (second image) The need to drill bone channels throughout the procedure is also eliminated. The advantage? Significant reduction in postoperative pain. Another big plus of this fixation system is that it allows anterior cruciate ligament replacement surgery in immature patients whose growth cleft has not yet closed (age 14-17 years).
The Arthroscopy Centre of Beroun Hospital has also expanded its operations in the area of the shoulder joint in case of AC luxations (dislocation of the shoulder joint). This operation is already possible from three 1cm inlets", says MUDr. Kopečný, recalling the advantages of this operation and adding that this results in a significantly better cosmetic effect.
Finally, let us recall that the Arthroscopy Centre of the Beroun Hospital performs a wide range of arthroscopic operations, including complex and reconstructive ones. Among other things, operations are also performed in which patients are implanted with partial replacements, mostly in the knees. This is certainly very good news for younger people (the lifetime of a total knee replacement is around 20 years), but also for older people for whom replacing the entire joint with a total knee replacement would be too demanding an operation.
