The participants were guided through the expert programme by colleagues from the Department of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Medicine at the University Hospital Pilsen. During the almost three-hour meeting, they presented new trends in the care of peripheral and central catheters and the importance of proper manipulation.
"Our aim was to convey information on how to safely care for the catheter and what materials to choose, as this is 90% of the success of the entire venous system. At the same time, also to introduce the prevention of complications such as dislocation, occlusion or infection," said one of the speakers , Mgr. Adéla Vlasáková, station nurse at the vascular access centre of the Pilsen hospital.
Nurses could try out dressing materials, catheters and practice Huber needles for port systems. The fact that the workshop fulfilled its purpose was evidenced by the positive feedback from the nurses themselves. Viola Hornychová, a nurse at the RNB Arthroscopy Centre, particularly appreciated the connection between theory and practice: "I took away a lot of useful information for my future practice and studies. I appreciate the fact that we were able to try everything out practically - even if you normally work with it, it is very beneficial to recall and reinforce the procedures."
The course thus reaffirmed that systematic learning and sharing of experiences across the workplace are key to quality, safe and modern patient care.
