MUDr. Jan Calta, Icon of the Rehabilitation Centre of Beroun Hospital

7. 3. 2022

Every year on this day we commemorate a sad anniversary. This year it is 5 years since the death of MUDr. Jan Calta, the long-time director of the Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre in Pardubice and medical director of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun and the Hořovice Hospital.

MUDr. Jan Calta was born in 1951 into an artistic family in Prague. His father was a stage designer and his mother an actress. In 1978 he graduated from the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, specializing in rehabilitation and physical medicine. Besides photography, rehabilitation medicine became his great passion. He not only had a unique feeling and sense for new directions in the field of rehabilitation, but also had the necessary courage and indomitable will to propose, defend and enforce these directions in practice. The result of his systematic efforts is, among other things, the modern Rehabilitation Centre, the pride of the Beroun hospital and the AKESO holding.

"It is exactly 12 years since the advertisement was published in which the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun was looking for candidates for the position of occupational therapist," says Pavla Košková, head of occupational therapy. "I responded to this offer because I wanted to try an unfamiliar environment and get to know a new team, even though I was planning to go abroad. Since I was working and I didn't have the opportunity to go for a personal interview in the near future, I found the answer unprecedented for that time. I was offered by Dr. Calta the opportunity to meet at my place of residence. That was the first time I thought that was incredible. We met on a weekend in a nice café on the square in Hradec Kralove. I have to say that the meeting with the then head of the rehabilitation centre was very nice. I could tell right away that he was a professional and an enthusiast who brought me not only photos of the hospital, but also large folders full of pictures, projects, plans and ideas. The offer was not only to start working here as an occupational therapist, but more importantly to participate in building this field in the local hospital. I was so impressed and influenced by his energy and enthusiasm that I decided not only to accept the offer, but also to give up my planned trip abroad after a year," says Pavla Košková, the head of occupational therapy.

MUDr. Calta was an important personality who won many people over with his conviction, enthusiasm, hard work and natural authority. He was a medical director, yet he was interested in the opinions of other workers in any position. He always appreciated good work and did not spare any thanks. Those who knew him personally had the opportunity to see his passionate, even short-tempered way of discussing work matters, but also his sensitive side. This can still be seen in his photographs, which are still displayed in the corridors of the hospital.

"It was an honour to get to know MUDr. Calta not only as a supervisor, but also to get to know him personally as a person with a big heart," adds Mrs. Košková.

Dr. Calta's great love was photography and travel. As a young boy, he had the opportunity to watch the important Czech photographer Josef Sudek, who was a close friend of his parents, at work. He liked to take pictures of the surroundings of Beroun, but in the corridors of the hospital in Beroun and Hořovice you can also find photographs of places from all over the world.

Thank you for remembering with us today a wonderful person and a great doctor MUDr. Jan Calta. Mr. Calta remains in the memories of his colleagues, friends and patients as a man who always had a warm personal relationship with everyone around him.
