Charity Beroun, as part of its collection GOOD WILL, organizes on 25.4.2019 in Beroun a unique performance of the flamenco dance troupe Virgine Delgado called AIRE.
Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun and Hořovice Hospital are proud partners of this performance. Thanks to this, we can provide you with an invitation to the performance, an interview directly with the leader of the ensemble and the author of the performance.
Virginie Delgado is a native of Madrid and the mother of a nine-year-old son who has settled permanently in Prague, where she runs a dance school. Aire is her first major authorial project.
What is Aire about?
It's flamenco and live music. It's about the most traditional styles, but also more lyrical positions of flamenco. In terms of both the music and the dance itself. Aire is Czech for breeze. The dramaturgy of the performance is actually a search for a path, at the end of which a window will open allowing breathing. I think everyone can identify with that. Because probably all of us have had the experience of not being able to move on, so to speak.
Is this a premiere, or have you danced Aire before? What's the response?
Aire premiered recently, in November 2018 at the Prague Flamenco Day. The reaction of the audience was beautiful, the feedback was very nice.
How did you manage to bring together so many excellent dancers and musicians from the Czech Republic?
Flamenco is spreading a lot outside Spain. It has no borders and everywhere in the world you can find musicians and dancers at the top level. I don't feel any difference with my Czech colleagues, as if I were in Spain.
Are the Czechs interested in flamenco?
Flamenco already has a presence throughout Central Europe. There are 4 festivals in the Czech Republic where flamenco plays a big role: besides the Flamenco Day, there is also the Festival Iberica in Brno, Flamencopa in Pilsen and Flamenco Colours in Olomouc. Flamenco is a universal language. Every year more and more students enrol in my courses.
Where are the roots of flamenco and where is it most danced in Spain?
Flamenco has its deepest roots in Andalusia, in the south of Spain. But, for example, one of the greatest bailaoras (flamenco dancers), Carmen Amaya, was born in Barcelona, Catalonia.
How does a Spanish dancer become a flamenco teacher in the Czech Republic?
I learned the dance in Madrid, where I come from. When you are ready - at least to a certain extent - to dance professionally, you get to work abroad. I came to the Czech Republic because of flamenco. So actually, flamenco is the reason I live in the Czech Republic. And then it was fate. I stayed and I'm grateful that I can teach here as a teacher and share everything I've learned. I am still learning and growing.
Does flamenco have a hidden message?
It may seem like it, but it's not. Flamenco is pure reality, it's emotion and passion. Everything you see on stage is true. Nothing is hidden.
