Central sterilization is the heart of the hospital

We continue our series of introductions to our departments. The next in the series is one of the most important departments of our hospital, namely central sterilization.

Central sterilization is a specialized medical workplace whose task is pre-sterilization preparation, packaging, sterilization and dispensing of all sterile material for all hospital departments. Its tasks and focus make it one of the components of hospital infection prevention and one of the basic aspects of comprehensive health care. The aim of the central sterilisation department is to ensure a high level and quality of sterilisation of medical devices.

Do you know how much a surgical kit weighs? Some kits are 3 kg, others up to 9 kg, and each one has to be picked up by the sterilisation staff. More than 200 kg pass through their hands in a day. You might be surprised to learn about the cables or the various hoses needed for surgery. Around 317 metres of these have to be sterilised every day.

One of our most loyal employees gave an insight into the work of her colleagues in the central sterilisation department in a recent article. Emilie Dejdar, an OR nurse who has worked at the hospital for over 50 years. You can read an interview with her here.
