An indispensable part of any quality hospital

The department of internal medicine, more commonly called internal medicine, is a truly indispensable part of any quality hospital. Beroun's internal medicine department is a beautifully equipped department with state-of-the-art equipment, but let's face it, its reputation is based primarily on the quality of care and the good attitude of the entire staff towards patients.

This is evidenced not only by the feedback from patients, the trust of doctors who send their patients here for treatment, but also by the successful accreditation, which means the possibility of official training in internal medicine and improving the qualifications of both tribal doctors and others who come to the Beroun hospital for internship. "Young people can learn a lot here, they will encounter a wide range of diagnoses," says the head of the internal medicine department, doc. MUDr. Karel Sochor, CSc. He adds that over the past 8 years, a number of doctors have worked in the internal medicine department and are now sought-after qualified general practitioners in Beroun and the surrounding area. Some of them continue to maintain professional contact with the internal medicine department, including personal attendance at emergency services. It should be remembered that the inhabitants of the catchment area of Beroun and parts of Prague-West cannot go to some specialised department in Prague with every deterioration of their health condition, and the internal medicine department at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun is in fact the only facility providing 24-hour "acute" care to the people of the region when their health condition deteriorates. Yes, it is necessary to have facilities like the Beroun hospital, let's say a quality "base" where the patient is treated and diagnosed, and the doctor decides whether the health problem can be solved directly in Beroun or whether it is necessary to provide specialized care. "Just to give you an idea, if we have, for example, a patient with an acute myocardial infarction, the moment we perform the first treatment, we are in contact with one of the Prague cardiac centres and there is already a prepared room, where immediately after the patient is transported, the doctor performs cardiac catheterisation, which is both a diagnostic and therapeutic method," says doc. Sochor adds that the patient is then usually transferred back to Beroun, to a high-tech intensive care unit, which again confirms the quality of the local hospital. As well as the cardiac centres, the Beroun hospital is also linked to other highly specialised units, for example in the field of gastroenterology (digestive diseases) or stroke.

Of course, the department with forty-five beds and seven beds in the intensive care unit, in modern rooms with all the facilities, is also connected with the care of patients in the specialised outpatient clinics, the necessary consultations for many patients, especially in the now highly sought-after Rehabilitation Centre, and much more. For example, patients with pacemakers do not have to travel to Prague for their check-ups; the Beroun hospital also offers this option in a specialised outpatient clinic, as well as oesophageal echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart with a probe in the oesophagus). "The equipment of the hospital, the diagnostic facilities, the quality of the biochemistry and haematology department and many other things allow us, but actually also make it easier for us, even though we do not have any specialised workplace here, compared to large hospitals or clinics, and therefore we have to deal with a wide range of different diagnoses, I think we can manage it", added the head of the Beroun internal medicine doc. MUDr. Karel Sochor, CSc, adding that on the other hand, it is an advantage not only for patients, but also for young doctors who come to the hospital to work or just to intern. They simply have it first hand.
