Talk it Easy seminar a huge success

For the first time in the Czech Republic, the Talk it Easy seminar focused on the pitfalls and opportunities of communication in the clinical practice of physiotherapists, brought to our hospital by internationally renowned colleagues Georg Supp and Stephanie Moers. The two-day meeting took place in a very friendly and fun atmosphere, from which the participants took away a lot of new and valuable knowledge that they can use immediately.

Lecturers from the German city of Freiburg came to the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun at the invitation of our methodologist Mgr. Ondřej Houška. The seminar was attended by 27 people, more than a third of whom were from the Rehabilitation Centre of MUDr. Jan Calta, which is part of our hospital. The rest of the participants came from different parts of the Czech Republic.

The Talk it Easy project is relatively new. It had its premiere only last year and our hospital hosted it for the first time in the Czech Republic. Its concept is based on the analysis of data obtained from the environment of physiotherapy practice both by the lecturers themselves and their colleagues. The listeners will therefore be drawn into the philosophy that quality communication is as important a skill for a healthcare professional as their necessary professional knowledge.

"This data has repeatedly shown us that despite the emphasis on treatment techniques and high levels of clinical skill, physiotherapists often failed to achieve the expected treatment outcomes. This is often due to a lack of communication at the therapist-patient level. A secondary impetus for embarking on the project was the fact that colleagues in the field still have limited opportunities to become more educated in this area," describes Georg Supp.

Stephanie Moers added that many excellent therapists often fail to reach their full potential precisely because of misunderstandings. Yet, she said, it is effective communication that greatly enhances professional skills and is thus closely intertwined with them. "I started thinking about the concept of Talk it Easy when I was researching work ethics in various professions working in social and health care. In this field, the issue of communication is strongly reflected, but there has been nothing like this within physiotherapy practice. So George and I put our heads together and started to develop the seminar," explained the lecturer.

As both lecturers outlined, presenting the seminar in English, also their second language, and with the help of instant translation into Czech, meant entering uncharted waters for them. The daring venture, however, turned out to be a success. "Communication as such is a very challenging discipline in any professional environment. Moreover, we presented a seminar directly dedicated to communication for the first time in such a concept, so it was definitely a test. We are all the more pleased that we already know, based on the very positive feedback from the participants, that both days were a great success. The credit for this goes of course to Yulie Skadchenko and her very professional interpreting work and to the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun for its absolutely flawless organisation. Thank you very much," commented Georg Supp.

Physiotherapist Klara Bartonkova from the Certified McKenzie Clinic in Kladno shared a similar opinion. "I know Georg very well, so I knew I had chosen a great seminar that would be beneficial to me. But most of all, I was pleasantly surprised by your entire hospital, which I saw for the first time. Beautiful surroundings, great cuisine. Thank you very much for the excellent organisation and I look forward to coming back again next time," said the physiotherapist.
