What can a social worker help you with in hospital?

15. 7. 2020

Each hospital has a social worker who provides social and legal counselling related to the illness. In our hospital we have two wonderful ladies - PhDr. Marie Palánová and Bc. Jana Kočišová, DiS. Both of them help to solve social problems of the patient if he/she cannot do it alone, cannot, does not want to or has no family.

This work, and especially in the healthcare field, is an essential part of the nursing and treatment process. In their work, colleagues must observe basic ethical principles, respect the basic human rights of patients, generally binding legal norms and all this in accordance with respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms. Together with the patient, she sets priorities, procedures and goals. She also works closely with and involves the patient's family, guardians and close relatives in the social work process. Everything is very individual. The social worker should also motivate her patients to solve their own problems and help them to make efficient use of the material and financial resources of social care services.

The priority, however, remains the provision of professional social counselling and orientation towards the patient or his/her family in a specific problem, offering solutions to their situation.

Who can contact our social workers?

  • Patients who, for whatever reason, are unable to resolve their situation
  • Patients who are unable to resolve their situation on their own or with the help of their loved ones

The most common reasons for finding it difficult to deal with their situation are:

  • material hardship
  • disability
