Rehabilitation stay in the Beroun hospital restored my father's zest for life

"It's like Switzerland," Jan Kramár, a businessman from Teplice, who has been driving his father Václav to the Rehabilitation Centre of Jan Calta for the fifth year now, says of our hospital. As he describes, his father's once very poor health condition has improved dramatically only thanks to the teamwork of nurses, physiotherapists and doctors at the Beroun facility.

Sixty-six-year-old Václav Kramár originally worked as a miner in the Ore Mountains. The hard work of mining took a toll on his body and he had to take early disability retirement at the age of 39 when he was diagnosed with vasoneurosis in his hands. Since then, he enjoyed otherwise relatively good health until 2019, when he began complaining of pain in his calves.

"My dad and I went through a series of tests. Eventually, he was kept at a hospital in Northern Bohemia where, among other things, he underwent two lumbar punctures. Everything went relatively well until he suddenly stopped seeing out of one eye and gradually other problems with his legs started to develop until he stopped walking altogether," says Jan Kramár, adding that doctors eventually diagnosed his father with polyneuropathy.

As his health deteriorated, it was necessary to start rehabilitation as soon as possible. Jan Kramár initially tried to get a job for his father at the Rehabilitation Institute in Kladruby, and then learned from friends about the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. "I looked at your website and was immediately impressed by the amazing video. After watching it, I suddenly felt like I was somewhere in Switzerland. I remember that my father was not at all well at that time, and when I showed him the video, he was absolutely overjoyed," he recalls.

The first hospitalization at the Rehabilitation Centre of Jan Calta, MD, was arranged for his father for the summer of 2019. Unfortunately, however, in the meantime, Václav Kramár's condition continued to deteriorate and, among other things, he gradually stopped seeing out of his other eye. "To this day, we are still not sure why this happened, but it is very likely due to blood clots. It took a lot out of him and he lost about twenty kilos because he practically stopped eating. A lot of medication on top of that. Well, it wasn't good at all," the son continues to tell the story.

Then, during August, they came to Beroun. "As soon as we were ushered into the room, suddenly there were two nurses around my father and one of them asked him: 'Mr Kramár, what are you going to have for lunch?'"At that time I didn't eat at all, I couldn't. But then I arrived at your place and suddenly ate my entire lunch with gusto. I still remember what it was - Frankfurt soup and rice pudding, which I didn't like at all because of the army," Mr. Václav added with a smile.

With his appetite improving and rehabilitation underway, his zest for life returned, he was able to stand on his feet again and his walking gradually improved. "It was mainly thanks to the environment, the care and the positive attitude of your staff that Dad got back together so quickly. The change - especially in his psyche - was something amazing. I dare say that it is only because of this that he is still with us," Jan Kramár praises him.

This was the fifth year that Václav Kramár was admitted to the Jan Calta Rehabilitation Centre - this time for three weeks. The doctors prepared a program for him that included exercises on a motomed, massages, time with a physiotherapist, and the so-called wet treatments included a swimming pool and a foot whirlpool. "In the time I've been coming here, my feet have improved greatly and slowly feeling is returning to them," the senior described the experience.

The progress that Václav Kramár has made so far also makes his son happy. "Thank you very much to the owner Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis for being able to build such a facility for us ordinary people. And on behalf of my father, I am very grateful to all the staff of the hospital who took such nice care of him every time. Hats off to you," concludes Jan Kramár.
