"Our goal is to offer patients comprehensive and high-quality care focused on restoring the function of the hand and the entire upper limb, including improving grip strength, which is crucial for managing everyday activities. Each person has different needs and we try to adjust the therapy to support their self-sufficiency and enable them to return to normal life as quickly as possible," says the occupational therapy methodologist at Beroun Hospital , Kristýna Hoidekrová, PhD.
Help for patients with a wide range of diagnoses
This therapy is most often suitable for patients after injuries or operations on the upper limbs, such as arthroscopies, total joint replacements, fractures or damage to ligaments and muscles. Another group of patients are those with neurological diseases - after a stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome or peripheral paresis.
But the list is far from over. "The therapy also helps patients with degenerative or rheumatological diagnoses, cognitive difficulties affecting normal daily activities, impaired fine motor skills, grip or coordination, or those who struggle with upper limb sensitivity," says Kristýna Hoidekrová.
Robotic exoskeleton and Virtual Reality Rehabilitation System
Occupational therapists also use state-of-the-art devices that combine new-generation assisted therapy with virtual reality rehabilitation capabilities. "The ALEX robotic exoskeleton is an innovative aid in functional neuromotor rehabilitation care of the upper limbs. It offers assisted therapy while performing complex movement of the entire limb, and the level of assistance can be adjusted either automatically or manually based on the needs of individual patients," explains Hoidekrova.
"Patients who need to increase muscle strength, range of motion or improve upper extremity coordination will benefit from the Virtual Reality Rehabilitation System during their therapy. This device has a wide range of applications across neurological and orthopaedic diagnoses and can also be used in telerehabilitation. It also includes training for cognitive functions such as memory, orientation, visuospatial functions or the creation of working strategies," adds the occupational therapist.
