The event was professionally chaired by Vlasta Bernášková, M.D., a rehabilitation physician at the Beroun hospital , who also shared her extensive experience in caring for patients with Parkinson's disease: "The aim of the meeting was to present our work and especially the Parkinson's programme, which has been running for two years. We have invited colleagues from neurologists and rehabilitation doctors so that together we can help as many patients with this diagnosis as possible, ideally at an early stage of the disease when treatment is most effective."
A multidisciplinary approach as the key to successful care
The programme offered the audience a wide range of perspectives on the disease. Above all, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. One of the key components of successful care for Parkinson's patients is physiotherapy. This was the topic of the lecture by Beroun physiotherapist who specializes in Parkinson's patients, Bc. Janis Lukáš, Cert. MDT.: "I presented the five main domains that we focus on in the diagnosis and based on which we tailor the therapy to each patient. Whether it's tremor, stability, falls, conditioning or freezing."
There were also presentations focusing on other important aspects of Parkinson's care. Clinical speech therapist of the Beroun Rehabilitation Centre Mgr. Kateřina Lísalová talked about the speech therapy effects of the disease, Bc. Patrície Burajová presented practical examples of occupational therapy for patients at different stages of the disease and PhDr. Vladimíra Plzáková offered insight into the role of psychologists in communicating with patients.
The intensive care of the Beroun Rehabilitation Centre helps
MUDr. Markéta Volfová, a neurologist from one of the clinics in Prague who has been working with Parkinson's patients for a long time, also visited the Beroun symposium. But I am interested in how to help them in other ways, so I was happy to attend this interesting event. I currently have two patients in the Parkinson program in Beroun and both of them are very satisfied with the care under the guidance of Dr. Bernášková. It is always very helpful for patients to have someone devoting themselves to them as intensively as the experts here at the Beroun rehabilitation centre."
Parkinson's disease also affects the young
The programme was rounded off with case studies of two patients suffering from Parkinson's disease in different stages. "This disease unfortunately affects more and more young people, so we invited our patient who was diagnosed at a young age. We talked about her non-specific first symptoms, her great motivation to exercise and her return to light sports, which until recently was almost impossible for her. The second patient represented an older generation of patients and came to us originally from a specialist extrapyramidal outpatient clinic. He is also very motivated and involved in research and studies specifically dedicated to Parkinson's disease. We very much appreciate that they were willing to speak at this symposium and share their stories with the audience," adds Dr. Bernášková.
Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital as a centre of modern care
Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital has long supported the education and professional development of its staff and healthcare professionals from the wider region. Events of this type confirm the hospital's role as a centre providing modern and comprehensive care not only in the field of rehabilitation, but also in the field of neurology and mental health.
