New data centres will help improve quality of service

AKESO Holding is planning to build two new state-of-the-art data centres, which will become a significant upgrade to the IT infrastructure of its healthcare facilities. As a result, the data centres will bring better services for patients, improve the level of care and enable the holding company to offer these benefits to more than just healthcare facilities.

The existing IT infrastructure capacities in the Hořovice Hospital and other facilities of the AKESO holding are partially decentralized in nature and due to the current development of services they are reaching the limit of their utilization. That is why the holding decided some time ago to build two new specialized data centers, which should ensure centralization and clear structuring of the basic IT infrastructure and services. The construction of two new data centres is currently underway: one adjacent to the Hořovice Hospital, the other on the premises of the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital.

"In order to live up to the holding's values of providing quality care, we need to have the necessary technologies to ensure the operation of applications and data transfer in the most modern form," says Hana Sobotková, head of data centres, who joined the holding some time ago in connection with the preparation of these new projects.

The capacity of the Beroun data centre will be about eight times smaller than the one in Hořovice. The Beroun centre is designed in the so-called Tier III standard, which means, among other things, a maximum of one hour and 36 minutes of unavailability per year. The centre in Hořovice will even be certified according to the Tier IV - Design standard, which guarantees a maximum of 15 minutes of unavailability in total for the whole year. Of course, the centres will be equipped with all the necessary technologies, including backup connectivity or a spare power supply. "The centre in Hořovice will be the only Tier IV data centre in Central Europe," says Sobotková.

"In Beroun, we have prepared tender documentation for a public procurement for a construction contractor, which we have to issue, given that we are using ESF funding for data centre projects, among other things," Sobotková outlines the current situation. The project in Hořovice is currently in the phase of drafting project documentation. The Beroun centre could be launched in January 2023 and the Hořovice centre in the middle of the same year.

For the patients themselves, the data centres will ensure the operation of existing applications, such as eTriage for entering the Beroun hospital, or future ones in the form of a portal for easy orientation in the holding's healthcare facilities. At the same time, they will help to improve the level of care provided "from the inside". They will improve the infrastructure for ordering patients to specialised surgeries, for example, and will also improve the exchange of data between doctors, which will be even safer and faster than before. "In acute cases, the speed and reliability of data handling, such as the transmission of X-ray images, is very important," Sobotka says.

"In addition to improving our own services and ensuring their top level in the future, we also want to offer the services of our data centres to other entities," explains Sobotková. In this respect, AKESO Holding wants to focus again primarily on healthcare facilities. "We want to help raise the level of healthcare in the Czech Republic, but also abroad. For example, we are counting on the development of services in the field of distance healthcare," Sobotková adds. In addition to hospitals and other healthcare facilities, she said, clients could also include the state administration or a number of private companies in any field.
