I think it's going to be a good year.

25. 12. 2020

The year 2020 ends in just a few days, so we asked our chief executives how has it been? What went well and what we wish for the next one. Today we bring you an interview with the head of the Rehabilitation Care Department of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, MUDr. Milena Kolářová.

Madam Chief, how do you think 2020 was?

The year 2020, as we all know, was unfortunately associated with a number of changes thanks to the pandemic. This was also reflected in our hospital. However, despite this situation, I can say that it was like other years. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. The good thing was that many of us verified our ability to respond to difficulties and changes, to help each other and to handle situations that had not occurred to us before.

What all went well?

At the Rehabilitation Centre, we functioned at all times. The spectrum of patients has changed at times during this year, however we have maintained care for patients with a range of diagnoses from orthopaedic, trauma and neurological. We have continued to work with hospitals and clinics, including care for lung transplant patients and cardiac surgery patients. This has allowed us to start working with patients after a difficult course of Covid 19 quite easily.

What was not covered this year?

This is partly related to the previous answer. The changes that have taken place in our hospital have meant, and so far still mean, less capacity in our Rehabilitation Centre, which has logically had to move to more acute specialties. This has meant that we have not been, and still are not, able to fully accommodate all requests for rehab. Some stays unfortunately have to be pushed back into the new year.

What are you proud of this year, how has it been successful?

We have expanded our instrumentation and thus the quality of treatment for neurological patients by adding functional electrical stimulation, a device that helps patients with limb paralysis to move. We use what is called FES (functional electrical stimulation) for gait training and for paretic hand training. We also have a robotic assisted rehabilitation device called MYRO for occupational therapy, which focuses on interactive rehabilitation. We have another new suspension device for walking patients and have expanded our rehabilitation days to include exercise on Sundays. This has been greatly helped by the physiotherapists and occupational therapists who have joined the service.

Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists have helped and continue to help in the care and rehabilitation of patients with Covid 19 infection. Our nurses and junior medical staff worked alternately for rehabilitation, surgical and internal medicine patients including those with Covid 19. Despite the heavy workload, the medical staff managed their work very well and showed our doctors this year that they need to be more versatile. We are proud to say that thanks to all our staff, we are still a quality and friendly hospital in a new and changing environment.

What are your department's plans for 2021?

The number one plan is to fill all of our departments again first and foremost, and we hope that the epidemiological situation will cooperate with us a little bit. We want to continue to care for all of our patients, with priority obviously being given to patients after acute conditions and operations, including those after artificial lung ventilation. We would welcome the opportunity to add to the nursing staff and also physiotherapists.

For doctors, physiotherapists and middle and junior medical staff we want to organise not only online training again, but we hope that in 2021 we will be able to hold the postponed Beroun Rehabilitation Day, which we had to cancel in 2020 due to the epidemiological situation.

What are your personal wishes and plans for next year?

I think it will be a good year. Every time there is a problem and a person overcomes it, they feel much better. I don't know exactly what will happen in 2021, but I am looking forward to it. And on a purely personal selfish note, I'd like to travel abroad again for a while.

What would you wish for patients, colleagues and hospital management?

Most of all, I would like to wish everyone good health! To our patients, I would wish that they enjoy their stay with us and continue to visit us with gusto. To my colleagues, I wish them to be happy with themselves at home and at work and that we continue to work well together. And I would like the management of our hospital to be happy with us and to continue to do great work together.
