Rehabilitation medicine in the spotlight
The expert guarantor of the conference was doc. MUDr. Jiří Kozák, Ph.D., who together with the organizing team led by prim. MUDr. Milena Kolářová and MUDr. Ondřej Horáček, Ph.D. prepared a varied program focused on various aspects of pain treatment - from physiological and psychological to surgical and pharmacological approaches.
"It is a great pleasure that the participation is very high again this year, we are practically at full capacity. I have to reminisce about the times when we started with far fewer participants. It's a testament to the fact that rehabilitation medicine is gaining more and more recognition, which is great. We have invited renowned experts who have presented their lectures on current topics that resonate in the field of rehabilitation," said Milena Kolářová, MD, head of the Rehabilitation Centre of Jan Calta Beroun Hospital.
New findings in the pathophysiology of pain are changing the approach of doctors to patients
A number of leading experts from the fields of rehabilitation, psychology and pain medicine spoke during the programme. Doc. MUDr. Jiří Kozák, Ph.D. focused his lecture on the pathophysiology of pain and new trends in its therapy. "In the pathophysiology of pain, the term nociplastic pain is newly emerging and already officially recognized. It is a type of chronic pain that can be perceived by the patient even when its organ or structural cause cannot be clearly identified. A typical example is fibromyalgia, where no organ involvement can be demonstrated and yet the patient actually feels pain. In my paper I have shown how this category of pain can be used in clinical practice. I also focused on interventional methods, for example, the use of electrostimulation techniques or diagnostic ultrasound for guiding sprays and other therapeutic procedures," explained Associate Professor Kozák, an algeziologist at the Centre for Treatment and Research of Painful Conditions at the Motol University Hospital in Prague.
Visceral pain represents both a challenge and an opportunity for modern rehabilitation
Other lectures focused on psychological aspects of chronic pain, surgical approaches to degenerative changes in the spine and differential diagnosis of visceral pain. Petr Bitnar, PhD, PhD, who works at the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Education, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague and Motol University Hospital, and is a regular guest at the Beroun Rehabilitation Day, introduced this issue to the audience. I explained how organ pain affects the motor system and how it is connected with somatic pain. I emphasized that the physiotherapist must be able to differentiate between these pains in order to choose the correct course of treatment or refer the patient for further evaluation. At the same time, rehabilitation has a number of ways to influence visceral pain - for example, through reflexology, viscerofascial techniques or positioning."
Multidisciplinary collaboration is the key to successful pain management
The participants' interest was also aroused by the topic of the possibilities of using neurostimulation methods in the treatment of pain, which was evaluated by rehabilitation physician Natálie Šebková, M.D., from the Rehabilitation Clinic of the VFN and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University: "I was interested in the lecture on trends in neurostimulation, which I think has a great future. The lecture by Dr Kövári was also inspiring, as she reminded us how important it is to think about biological factors. I also always enjoy listening to Dr Bitnar, as the issue of visceral relationship is not commonly explored in diagnostics. I come to the Beroun Rehabilitation Day because the different topics are looked at from different professional perspectives, which is the key to successful treatment."
The conference also included a lively discussion that reaffirmed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the treatment of patients suffering from pain. The event was held under the auspices of the Society of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine ČLS JEP.
