"It's been a dream of mine for 15 years," Zavalianis says of the billion-dollar Mental Rehabilitation Center project

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, we bring you news from the ongoing construction of the Mental Rehabilitation Centre in Beroun.

The Mental Rehabilitation Centre is a unique project that has the ambition to become the most modern psychiatric workplace not only in the Czech Republic. "We can heal the body quite well, but it is worse with the soul. The construction of the Centre will allow us to offer psychiatric and psychological care to people who are struggling with mental problems, which are rapidly increasing," says Sotirios Zavalianis, owner of AKESO Holding.

The newly built Centre will have an area of 27,500 m2, an approximate capacity of 200 beds, as well as its own theatre, a 25-metre swimming pool, an enclosed sports hall or climbing walls.

For the highest comfort of patients and their families, there will also be fully equipped, modern apartments and a large underground car park. One of the many superior amenities will be a daylight simulation system, which can contribute significantly to improving the mental health of the patient. In fact, lack of natural light is often one of the factors leading to depressive states.

Compared to the original project, the Centre will have one more floor.

"The Centre will be serving the public in two years. In the meantime, we are communicating with the best experts in psychiatry so that the result will be the best psychiatry in Central Europe. What is expensive and unprofitable in the state segment is finally being realized here, and without state subsidies," says Pavel Scholz, deputy for project management.

The Centre's staff will focus on patients who require comprehensive mental health care.

According to Sotirios Zavalianis, the mental illness segment has long been neglected and underfunded. A large part of our population suffers from mental disorders, and it is these patients who often experience a lack of available specialist care. "I hope that our facility will perhaps become an inspiration for young people to take an interest in studying psychiatry and psychology. If they choose to do so, they can expect our support. For example, in the form of the scholarship programme that we offer in our medical facilities," Zavalianis adds.
