VIII. Beroun Rehabilitation Day

25. 10. 2019

A unique opportunity to compare experiences in hand and upper limb rehabilitation.

VIII. Beroun Rehabilitation Day was held again this year at the Grand Litava Hotel. Professionals from the ranks of doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses had to be very fast if they wanted to get to the conference, because more than a month before the conference, its capacity was hopelessly full. "We are delighted with the huge interest in this now traditional conference. As always, it was booked long before the actual event. Unfortunately, there is no larger venue in the vicinity of our hospital that could cater for all interested parties. It means how well known and appreciated this conference is among doctors," said Ondřej Horáček, the head of the rehabilitation centre of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, who is also the guarantor of the whole event.

The conference, which was aimed at professionals in the field, was held in a very friendly atmosphere and there were also video demonstrations of surgical procedures and rehabilitation. The introductory lecture was given by Dr. Martina Hoskovcova from the Neurological Clinic and Centre of Clinical Neurosciences at the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. She talked about what we already know in the therapy and examination of spastic upper limb.
During the lecture by Dr. Tomáš Hellmuth from the Institute of Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery in Vysoké nad Jizerou, each of the participants tested whether they had a tendency to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists from leading Czech clinics and institutes had prepared demonstrations of the latest trends in their field. Very interesting were the videos and photos from spastic syndrome surgeries by Dr. Ludmila Fialová and the view of Master Ota Gal from the Neurological Clinic and the Centre of Clinical Neurosciences of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Prague on the possibilities of hand rehabilitation before and after the surgery.

Across each lecture there was a clear consensus and call for very close interaction between the surgeon, rehabilitation doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and the absolutely key aspect leading to the success of the whole rehabilitation is sufficient communication with the patient, not only during the rehabilitation of the hand. "With the use of all modern methods and with good cooperation of the patient, the number of non-functional and severely spastic hands, which subsequently affect the whole life of a person, should significantly decrease," said Milena Kolářová, the head of the rehabilitation centre of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, at the end of her presentation.

"It is incredible what rehabilitation can do nowadays. I am very pleased and proud that our Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun is at the top in this field," said the owner of the Beroun Rehabilitation Day, Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.

"I thank all the speakers very much for their presentations, which ended with a long applause. I already have a plan in my head for next year's event and I would like to make it a bit unconventional. However, I will not reveal any more, I can only say, look forward to it, it will be worth it," invited the Chief Medical Officer Ondřej Horáček to the next edition of the Beroun Rehabilitation Day.
