Exactly one year has passed since the death of Jan Calta, MD, a leading rehabilitation physician, founder and mentor of the Beroun Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, on 6 March 2018. Since last October, his bronze bust has adorned the main entrance to the Rehabilitation Centre and his name has been an integral part of this modern pavilion.

Jan Calta was born in 1951 into an artistic family in Prague. His father was a stage designer and his mother an actress. In 1978 he graduated from the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, specializing in rehabilitation and physical medicine. Rehabilitation medicine became, besides photography, a great passion of his life. He was distinguished by the fact that he not only had a rare feeling and sense for new directions in the field of rehabilitation, but also had the necessary courage and indomitable will to fight and push them through.

Since 2000 he started to cooperate with Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis. The result of the unique symbiosis of two strong personalities was the implementation of a new strategy of further development for the Multiscan Medical Group, which has become one of the most modern oncology and radiotherapy centres in the country, and similarly, the rescue of the formerly closed Beroun hospital, which is now a modern medical facility with a unique rehabilitation centre. He was a long-standing director of Multiscan s.r.o., operating an oncology and radiodiagnostic centre in the Pardubice Region, and medical director of JESSENIA a.s. and NH Hospital a.s., which operate the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun and the Hořovice Hospital, of which he was an expert representative.

"Jan Calta was an exceptional personality. He was full of great vitality and positive energy, which he projected into his plans and transferred to his surroundings. The local rehabilitation centre, the most modern facility of its kind in the Czech Republic, is his child. Innovative practices, insight and commitment to new visions are documented by the several years of successful operation of this rehabilitation hospital," recalls Sotirios Zavalianis.

Dr. Calta has also been instrumental in the modernisation of the Beroun and Hořovice hospitals, which have become modern facilities promoting the latest medical procedures. He also personally contributed to the decoration of the premises with a collection of his own original photographs. Photography has accompanied him from an early age. As a young boy he had the opportunity to watch the important Czech photographer Josef Sudek, who was a close friend of his parents, at work. During his wanderings and travels, Dr. Calta liked to find interesting places for photography, where his sense of composition and detail stood out, and with the development of photographic techniques he found a taste for panoramas. His photographs have been publicly exhibited several times. His latest exhibition "Small shops and other still lifes" is a permanent exhibition in the Beroun hospital.

Jan Calta will remain in the memories of his colleagues, friends and patients as a man who always had a human and personal approach to everyone in his surroundings. Thanks to his work commitment, strong will, willingness to help, but also fair, honest and personal approach, Dr. Calta always achieved the realization of his visions and life plans.
