Old age is not a disease, but a stage of life. It can also be lived well.

Under this motto, the two largest providers of health care in Beroun - Medicentrum and Beroun Hospital - launched a programme dedicated to Beroun's seniors last year. There are quite a lot of similar programmes for the elderly, especially in larger towns, but few are free of charge like this one.

Both health care entities have thus proved, among other things, that the owners and employees of both facilities, despite the many problems that the organization of health care services unfortunately brings daily, appreciate old age and certainly, as it is often presented, do not consider everything only in terms of financial effect.

The first part of the Ageing is not a disease programme, which took place at the Pensioners' Club and Pension for the Elderly in Beroun last autumn, started with an introductory lecture on the revitalisation of the Beroun hospital, accompanied by a talk in which a spokesperson for the hospital tried to answer all the questions of those present. This was followed by a several-month memory training course, directed by the Beroun Medicentre.

As last year, the next stage of the programme, at the beginning of February, started with a talk by the hospital spokesperson about the news and the range of medical services at the Beroun hospital, and it was obvious that the completely full Pensioners' Club was impressed by this topic. Yes, seniors really welcome such informative talks.

The Beroun Hospital, which together with the staff of the Beroun Municipality organises and coordinates the programme, is also becoming its provider in its second phase. The seniors in the Pensioners' Club and the Pension for the Elderly will be provided with some important information on fall prevention and balance exercises, including concrete demonstrations, through the Beroun hospital's medical staff. Subsequently, discussions and lectures will be devoted to what the seniors - as they were offered at the start of the programme - have chosen. They will learn about basic stretching and relaxation exercises, but also about common problems in old age such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. This part of the Age is not a Disease programme should run until around the holidays. After that, further ways can be sought to develop the programme further to interest the target group of older citizens. Of course, if there is interest.

In any case - the professional help of medical professionals from the Beroun hospital, a facility that is mainly dedicated to musculoskeletal care, is very important for the elderly, especially from a preventive point of view. The memory training course provided by the Medicentre also met with an interesting response. In short - this is also a way to help the elderly, to entertain them and, last but not least, to facilitate many things that are associated with old age.
