Child health care in the spotlight

14. 1. 2026

The health of a child is both fragile and extremely valuable. When illness or injury strikes, parents are not only looking for top-notch doctors, but also for a human touch, a sense of security and the assurance that their child will be cared for with respect for his or her age and emotions. It is on this combination of expertise and empathy that the comprehensive care of paediatric patients within the AKESO medical holding company is built.

Modern healthcare today is not just about one examination or procedure. The goal is to provide cutting-edge medicine in an environment where children feel safe and parents can be assured that their loved ones are receiving the utmost attention. The Children's Department of Hořovice Hospital provides a wide range of paediatric care, including care after injuries or surgical procedures, and takes a comprehensive view of the patient. The department includes an inpatient part, an outpatient part including a children's emergency room.

"We can provide comprehensive care within the hospital - from general practitioners for children and adolescents in Hořovice, Králov Dvůr and Žebrák to specialised outpatient clinics. The broad team consists of experienced specialists in, for example, paediatric pneumology, allergy, nephrology, gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology and paediatric surgery. I recommend parents who cannot find a paediatrician or other paediatric specialist in their area to contact our clinics - we will be happy to see them," explains the head of the Children's Department , MUDr. Jiří Jiráček.

Thanks to close cooperation with other departments of the hospital, care is also provided for children after orthopaedic, urological, gynaecological and ENT surgeries. The Hořovice Hospital is also home to two unique departments in the Czech Republic - the Department of Long-term and Intensive Nursing Care for Children (DIOP) and the Department of Intensive Care for Children (NIP). These departments provide comprehensive medical care for children with serious, life-limiting illnesses and their families.

A unique integrative paediatrics project

Since 2020, Hořovice Hospital has also been running a unique pilot project of integrative paediatrics, which links multiple specialties and offers comprehensive and coordinated care to children and their families.

"This innovative approach responds, among other things, to the growing number of paediatric patients with chronic or recurrent problems for which standard examinations do not reveal a clear cause, but also to the increasing number of children with various psychological difficulties. The aim of this concept of care is to offer patients support at the interface of physical and mental health and at the same time to involve the whole family in the treatment process," says MUDr. Mahulena Exnerová, the guarantor of the development of comprehensive paediatric care and the head of the Department of Supportive and Palliative Care at Hořovice Hospital.

Therefore, an interdisciplinary team consisting of paediatricians, a clinical psychologist, a psychiatrist, a physiotherapist, a nutritional therapist, a speech therapist, a chaplain and a social worker was created in Hořovice. This team regularly consults together on individual cases and seeks the most appropriate course of action to address the difficulties of a child or adolescent patient. This means that parents do not have to make complicated searches for specialists on their own when needed - they receive coordinated, "tailor-made " care within the children's ward.

Modern system, kind approach

The strength of the AKESO medical holding lies in the combination of modern medicine with a personal approach. Each child is seen as unique, and the doctors and non-medical staff are able to communicate not only with the patient but also with his or her family so that treatment takes place in an environment of trust and a sense of security. Parents play a major role in the care of the paediatric patient and are seen as a natural part of the treatment process. This allows them to be supportive of their child and to understand what is happening and why.

The aim of the whole system is to ensure that parents can be confident that their children have affordable, safe and comprehensive care - from prevention to specialised treatment and rehabilitation.

Affordable care for families

Parents with children can also benefit from the care of the AKESO POLICLINIC, which offers outpatient appointments in a wide range of disciplines, from general practitioners for children and adolescents to specialist outpatient clinics. The polyclinic in Prague's Nové Butovice district is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, such as magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray and ultrasound, which enable fast and accurate diagnosis without unnecessary burden on young patients. Thanks to the close connection with the hospital facilities, a smooth continuity of care is ensured, as well as a quick transfer to other specialists.

Care for body and soul

The Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun also plays an important role in the system of care for children in the AKESO healthcare holding . "Here we provide children with specialist occupational therapy and physiotherapy on an outpatient basis. Within the framework of physiotherapy, we offer care from the first weeks after birth for motor development disorders and neurological disorders. We can also help children with posture defects, scoliosis, flat feet or post-traumatic conditions," says AKESO Holding's Deputy for Rehabilitation Mgr. Jakub Pětioký, DiS., MBA. It also includes child psychiatric outpatient care within the Mental Rehabilitation Centre. This care supports not only the physical health of children, but also their psychological resilience and ability to cope with difficult life situations.
