A list of contraindications to the examination can be found on the examination request form.
General guidelines:
- The more accurately and in detail the request form is filled in and the clinician's requirement is specified, the more complete and detailed the MR examination and its conclusion can be!
- Please send with the patient all available previous X-ray, CT and MRI documentation (not just descriptions) and the results from the examinations performed so far
- The abdomen and some pathologies of the skeleton are rather the domain of CT, but not always - it is better to consult directly with a physician at the MR department for special indications
- For the MR examination it is absolutely necessary to keep the patient completely calm during the examination (10 -30 min).
- The exact procedure and method of examination (including the application of contrast medium) is always determined by the MR radiologist after analysis of clinical and anamnestic data and further during the examination according to the results of the initial examination sequences.
Indication list for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Neurology - brain (all intracranial pathological processes, intra- and extracerebral)
- congenital developmental defects
- Inflammation
- primary and metastatic tumours
- post-traumatic changes
- demyelinating diseases, especially MS!!!, degenerative diseases of vascular etiology
- pathology of the cerebral arteries and veins - in case of suspected occlusion, stenosis or aneurysm,...
- However, MR AG does not replace conventional angiography in the evaluation of subtle vascular changes
Types of possible examinations required:
- MR examination of the brain, posterior fossa, pituitary gland
- MRAG of the intracranial circulation ( arteries or veins)
- MRAG of the extracranial circulation (carotid arteries), ( to be preceded by Doppler examination)
Neurology - spine and spinal cord (all intraspinal and spinal pathological processes)
- congenital developmental defects
- Inflammation
- Primary tumors and metastases ( intradural, extradural)
- traumatic and post-traumatic changes
- demyelinating ( RS!!) and degenerative diseases
- diseases of vascular aetiology
Types of possible examinations required:
- MR examination of the C, Th, LS spine ( it is advisable to specify the stage of neurological findings)
- MR AG of the spinal arteries is not performed!

- pathologies of the musculoskeletal system (soft tissues and skeleton)
- congenital malformations
- inflammations

- aseptic necrosis in children and adults
- traumatic and post-traumatic changes
- degenerative changes
Types of possible examinations required:
- MRI scan of the joint, bone, or exact specification of the area ( and questions)
Gynecology
- pathological processes in the small pelvis ( uterus and ovaries)
- especially tumours (staging ca cervicis)
- pelvic skeleton - before and after actinotherapy for ca uterus
Types of possible required examinations:
- MRI scan of the small pelvis ( specify area of interest)

- pathologies of parenchymatous organs of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum, biliary tract, thoracic and abdominal aorta, mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm
- tumours (especially liver lesions - differential diagnosis of haemangioma, metastases)
- assessment of the biliary tract (preceded by sonographic examination)
Types of possible examinations required:
- MRI of the liver, pancreas
- MR cholangiography
- MRAG of limb arteries ( contrast enhanced)
Contraindications
Obstacles to examination in a strong magnetic field are ferromagnetic metallic objects located in the human body. These metals can move or heat up due to the magnetic field in the body.
- Absolute contraindications to MRI scanning are an implanted pacemaker, or even a condition after its removal, and ferromagnetic clamps after surgery on cerebral vessels.
- A very serious obstacle is a foreign ferromagnetic body in the eye - after trauma - where severe visual impairment can occur due to the strong electromagnetic field.
- The presence of other metallic objects implanted in the body (e.g. joint replacements) and the possibility of an MRI examination must be assessed by the examining physician - the radiologist who is in charge of and responsible for the course of the examination.
- In most cases, claustrophobia - the fear of enclosed space - can be overcome by the patient lying in a narrow "tunnel" for the entire examination and being exposed to noise - in most cases this fear can be eliminated by medication applied before the examination itself and the examination can be performed.
A questionnaire is filled in with the patient before the examination, which contains the information needed to assess whether he or she is able to undergo the examination and under what conditions.
The patient receives instructions on how to behave and cooperate with the examination from the medical staff just before being placed on the examination table.
