Training for the handicapped using occupational therapy

11. 8. 2022

Occupational therapy is a therapeutic treatment aimed at achieving the highest possible quality of life of a disabled person, their social integration, the maximum possible degree of self-sufficiency and independence. In the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun we use a specially adapted exercise kitchen and a bathroom with many useful aids.

The kitchen is wheelchair accessible with not only the worktop height adjustable, but also the cabinets above the worktop and the storage space are movable. The entire kitchen, work surface or cabinets can be raised or lowered independently. The drawers are movable for easy wheelchair access. Each cabinet has a different type of opening so that patients can try them out and know what they can best handle themselves when adapting their own kitchen.

The aim of the compensatory aids is to reduce users' dependence on others and help them to be more independent. The aids facilitate self-care in the areas of food preparation and consumption, dressing, hygiene and normal daily activities. They compensate for the quality of grip in fine motor impairment and reduced range, precision and strength of movement. Being as self-sufficient as possible with minimal need for assistance is the ideal goal for our patients.
