Proper nutrition is essential for the quality treatment of patients

Nutritional therapist. A concept that is probably no longer unfamiliar to many people today. But do we know what all it provides and solves in the hospital?

"Actually, the main task is to provide patients with a healthy and varied diet that they would like, although it is sometimes more difficult with different diets, but we do our best," said Adéla Čížková, DiS, chief nutritional therapist at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. But what is behind this sentence, uttered with a smile? Cooperation in the preparation of menus, quality control of the food provided by the catering service, preparation of diet plans for individual patients according to their diagnosis and much more. However, it should certainly be stressed that among the very important tasks of the nutritional therapist in the Beroun hospital is everything that is connected with nutritional screening. With that said, it should be remembered that it is still not very common in healthcare institutions. What is it? A brief nutritional questionnaire is filled out with the patient on admission to the hospital, which is used to assess the patient's nutritional status and quickly determine whether he or she is at risk of malnutrition - or malnutrition. If so, it is the nutritional therapist, in collaboration with other health care staff, who works with the individual patient to change this condition. He or she assesses the patient's daily food intake, recommends appropriate food supplements, and, in cooperation with the attending physician, educates the patient and his or her loved ones about the most appropriate diet. "I am very happy that we are quite successful because the risk that results from malnutrition, or poor nutritional status, is great. It is probably needless to say that nutrition is very important and definitely influences the healing process significantly," emphasised Adéla Čížková.

During this year's Health Day, which was organised on the square in Beroun by the Hořovice Hospital in cooperation with the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, there was great interest in the monitor of the human body structure. This device, which the Beroun hospital owns, can determine not only a person's weight, but also total water, proteins, bone/non-bone minerals, fat mass, bone and muscle mass. Everyone took away printed measurement results and prepared material with tips on how to lose excess pounds and at the same time improve their diet, and on the other side of the sheet there were recipes for tasty healthy snacks. People could taste the special vegetable snacks, bean brownies, flourless cake, etc., which the Rehabilitation Hospital in Beroun had prepared especially for the event. The author of the recipes and the one who was really busy during the Health Day, in addition to consulting the results with everyone who was interested and possibly recommending a change in diet and lifestyle, was the head nutritional therapist of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun Adéla Čížková. This is just for the record, as proof that her work is truly diverse.
