Words that made us happy

The care of the Rehabilitation Centre of the Beroun Hospital has already been appreciated many times in various forms of written or published praise from those who have been treated here. Whether they were people unknown to the public or well-known - from the ranks of artists or top athletes. Not long ago, the well-known author of prose and essays, film and radio scriptwriting, musicologist, and an extremely educated man, PhDr. Zdeněk Mahler, was also treated at the Rehabilitation Centre. Why do we mention him? After all, we are happy about every award! But Dr. Mahler sent a beautiful open letter to the Beroun hospital and we are very happy to publish it.

Dear Mr. Horacek,
As much as I have tried to express my gratitude for the excellent care at your rehabilitation center, I would like to add a public appreciation of its uniqueness.
The injury that I suffered at an old age caused not only a physical defect - true, the operation was professionally performed thanks to Chief Zelenka, but the return to full consciousness was more difficult: in the big car of the Prague hospital I felt like a relay baton, I was in psychological shock, I lost motivation, I was overwhelmed by apathy, I was ripe for a write-off. The treatment stay in your centre meant a return to life for me. Your expert team took care not only of my crippled body, but also of my soul - they took away from me the uncertainty and depression that turns everything into a problem for an old man - they brought intimate personal knowledge, order and credible hope into my care - the specialist doctors (together with you, Drs Kolářová, Bubnová and Slováčková) and the wonderful staff of physiotherapists and nurses cared more than I deserved. (I have seen how even a welcoming, generous environment helps healing: it tunes patients into friendship, it is permeated with positive energy.)
It would be an exaggeration to say that it can make you homesick for the hospital....
Thank you all so much!
Zdeněk Mahler
